All Saints' Eve 2008

This year's All Saints' Eve proved to be lots of fun! As usual, we took Miles to church to celebrate in style. There was a pumpkin and gourd decorating contest, along with voting for this year's saint of the year. Per tradition, the kids dressed up as a saint or Bible character and read a rhyme or clue so we could try to guess who they were. Here is a picture of Miles' costume this year, along with our rhyme for him:

Maximus Miles Hunter as "Saint Paul (Kushiner) the Acolyte"

To all you young boys who surely have hopes
to be the head acolyte, I'll show you the ropes!
It's no laughing matter, the rules must be followed;
The altar is sacred, the ground here is hallowed.
We help lead the worship of our Lord and Savior,
so all of us must be on our best behavior.

Lest you forget, Father Pat is the boss,
so in rare moments when it seems he is lost-
simply give him a nudge or hand him the sensor.
Don't do anything that might make him tenser,
for during the service he's so busy praying,
that sometimes he just forgets what he's saying!

As acolytes, we must have a handle
on what he needs next, be it sensor or candle.
We must stay alert, there's no time for resting.
Make sure all's in place while the clergy are vesting.
Tie your shoes, comb your hair, and keep your back straight,
and of course, most importantly, never be late!
Because no matter if there's one acolyte or seven,
we all do God's work for the Kingdom of Heaven.

(A special thank you to Aunt Carina for sewing Miles costume for us!)

"Saint" Paul is an acolyte at our church who has been serving as an acolyte for over ten years now. Since he is also red-headed (and gets embarrassed easily), we chose him as Miles' "saint" this year. Here is a photo of Miles and the real "Saint Paul" -

Can't you see the resemblance?

As I said earlier, everyone tries to guess who is who at the All Saints' Eve celebration. Brian took this photo of Miles' Godsister, Claire, who is obviously chomping at the bit to make a guess:
"Pick me! Pick me!"

Lastly, we don't know if it is because we dressed him up as an acolyte or what, but Miles has really taken a liking to our clergy. On Friday night, he spent most of the night with either Father Deacon Theophan or Subdeacon Joseph.
We think it's great!
